Well, that was a bit of a hiatus! Twelve years later, I’m back. My life has undergone quite a few significant changes, but as I look back at old posts, I’m struck by how some things have stayed the same. However, those are stories for another time. Here, now, I have returned to document my journey with rehabilitating my yard. Along the way, I might drop posts about how things have changed or other parts of my life. We’ll see.
Here are the big changes that will impact this journey with my yard:
- I bought a house. This means that I actually have a yard to maintain. I have been neglecting my yard for much of the 7 years I’ve owned this house. The house I bought was previously owned by someone who LOVED trees, so I have an abundance of trees, which complicates any yardwork.
- I was diagnosed with, and have been aggressively treating, ADHD. This is a big part of my mental health challenges, and I have to do some extra work in the background to keep track of what still needs to be done in the yard and balance my yard’s needs with the rest of my life. Part of the reason why I’m doing this blog is because it will help me keep track of what needs to be done and what progress has been made.
- I had COVID and subsequently experienced long COVID. TL;DR: COVID has severely impacted my ability to exert significant effort, and though I was training for a half marathon prior to the pandemic, I now struggle to run. It has also impacted my body’s ability to maintain body temperature, which means it’s very difficult for me to work outside under certain circumstances (and specifically in the Texas heat).
My inner biologist (biology was my original college major!) has been having a field day with all of the different species of insects, spiders, plants, fungi, and even animals I’ve seen in my yard. I am documenting what I find on both iNaturalist (everything!) and BlueSky (more interesting/noteworthy things).
Thank you for joining me on this journey. I welcome your feedback!
